The Lost Book OF Black Magic
I came home once with a book about Black Magic. It was Christmas week and my parents were in the hallway putting up a tree. My dad asked to see the book and after flicking through the pages handed it back and told me that he didn't want it in the house.
I grew up reading a lot, especially horror but there was never anything before that crossed the line of what I could read or, as it did in this case, seemed to set my dad so ill at ease. I'd borrowed the book from my cousin, so I walked back to his house. On the way, I had a look through the book. It was a guide to performing black magic, illustrated like the Usborne Supernatural Guides of the 80’s that I'd had for years, but there was something weird about the tone of it. There was a page with a step-by-step guide to selling your soul to the devil, including on a full page - the contract itself. I closed the book and gave it back.
I've tried to find it since with no luck. The thought there was something about the book that unsettled my dad has meant that I often think of it. The mystery of what was so unusual about it is far scarier than any possible reality.
